Protecting their little one's precious smile is a priority for every parent, and the more you know, the better choices you can make for your child about their dental health, nutrition, and smile treatment needs.

Today, we're discussing tooth decay and cavities. Tooth decay is prevalent in children, but the good news is that it's highly preventable. Here's what you should know.

Understanding Tooth Decay

Most of us know that sugar causes tooth decay and cavities, but knowing the mechanics can help you understand how to prevent cavities in kids.

Sugar actually acts as the fuel for the bacteria that live inside the plaque in your mouth. When that plaque isn't successfully removed by tooth brushing or flossing, the bacteria have a chance to grow and cause damage. Sugar is their fuel, and the byproduct of that is acid. This acid eats away at tooth enamel and causes decay and cavities.

Protecting Your Child's Smile

So, what can parents do to minimise tooth decay and cavities for their children?

  • Eat Fruits and Vegetables — Increasing your little one's intake of fruits and vegetables actually protects their smile. Fruits and veggies increase saliva flow and neutralise the acids in your child's mouth, reducing the development of cavities.
  • Consistent Home Care — Help your little one with brushing and flossing until around age seven or eight. Building a consistent and effective home care routine is a healthy habit that will serve them throughout their lives.
  • Drink Plenty of Water — Instead of soda or fruit juice, give your child water. This helps to hydrate their mouth and body and guards against tooth decay.
  • Fluoride Treatments — Use fluoridated toothpaste and take advantage of the fluoride treatment offered by your Lower Plenty dentist.
