Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Lower Plenty
If you have a painful or infected wisdom tooth, Dr Eva Tossoun (Dentist) may recommend removing it to protect the health of your adjacent teeth. St George’s Dental offers in-house wisdom tooth removal and evaluations to help you make the best decision about your third molars.
Your Wisdom Tooth Exam
When wisdom teeth are causing problems we typically recommend an X-ray or OPG of the area to evaluate what’s going on. From there, we can determine if the tooth is erupting properly, impacted against the adjacent tooth or even if you need to see a specialist.
Since wisdom teeth are positioned in a way that makes them hard to clean and prone to decay, removing them helps ensure the spread of infection into neighbouring teeth. Even if you tend to brush and floss well, partially-erupted wisdom teeth are statistically more likely to develop cavities and gum disease.
What to Expect
On the date your wisdom teeth are removed, we will gently numb the areas around them with local anaesthetic. Sometimes the extraction is quite straightforward, while other times it requires a bit more surgery. Most extractions can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour.
When you return home make sure not to touch the extraction site or eat any hard, crunchy foods. We recommend taking antibiotics to prevent infection and rinsing with warm salt water to remove any debris. It’s also important to keep an ice pack on the side of your mouth on the 3rd day when inflammation tends to be most prominent.
Depending on the type of extraction you need, over-the-counter or prescription painkillers will be advised.
